5 Habits That Will Badly Fail You as a Businessman

5 Habits That Will Badly Fail You as a Businessman

Business is all around us. With the world getting over populated, ideas are flooding around everywhere. Every new idea gives birth to a new earning plan. The most difficult process for any type of earning strategy is taking the first initiative to turn an idea into a practical plan. Rest all those profit and loss sinusoidal waves follow naturally by themselves. I started blogging back in ending months of the year 2008 and to be honest I never thought it would turn out to be an everlasting business engine. This year thought me great lessons when it comes to expanding this little blog into a network of ecommerce services and online websites that gave a whole new definition to the medium I work in. After going through the lives of some famous investors and successful executives I came to a point where I realized that business is not all about Long Term Investment, there is a lot more to it.

Note: For bloggers and freelancers who are looking to expand their career goals, the habits below are a must read.

The success of a real time earning mechanism is based on strong principles and set out rules and unless you know them then you are really just riding your business on a knife edge. I am sharing below some significant habits in a businessman's life that unless rectified could lead to a terrible end that leads no where.

1. No Clarity + No Purpose = No Results

Most of the business decisions that often fail are because of no clear rules, aims and financial plans. Statistics from U.S Small Business administration reveal that approximately about half of all new small business launched in USA will fail in coming 10 years. Reason? Poor financial management and set out goals.

Unless you clearly know what you need to do, how can you lead the cavalry following you at your back. Make your goals clear and write them in paper and pin it on your notice board to keep yourself focused and determined. Now to achieved these well defined goals, you need to be clear with every move you make. The best advise in this case is to look at your competitor and track all his moves. Only then you know what can turn into profit and what can cause loss. Keeping an upper hand is also the Market Samurai's style.  Clarity and Purpose will surely give fruitful result at the end of the day.

2. Abusing The Freedom

The above picture defines it all. Its every entrepreneur's dream to work late and sleep late. Having the freedom to work when you want and do what you want is awesome but this will drag you down to floor! Yes you are the sole boss of your business but you need to be much more disciplined when you are not working under someone. There is competition all around you and your competitor is well focused and his eyes are on all your activities. A slightest slumber can ruin all your empire. Being lazy will certainly fail you but hard work would undoubtedly rise you high.
To be honest being lazy at work is my biggest weakness. With increasing readership I should rather be thankful and should work even more, but the physical laziness has pushed me several miles away. The readers often find it uncomfortable to receive late replies to emails and comments but being late at their call is badly ruining the blog's growth. This something we need to work on it seriously.

3. Acting Like a Rabbit Rather a Wise Turtle

People often switch from one idea to another. Anything that seems more attracting, distracts your attention you jump to that discarding the project you were working on. Have patience  and give your plans a space to grow. Act wisely and never postpone or abandon a business target unless you are too sure.  Consistency and strong determination are key requirements for a risky career like entrepreneurship. Don't run like a attention seeking rabbit with distractions all around him, walk like a focused turtle who knows what his target is and how long will it take to finish.

4. Early Demands

Small business owners often attach huge expectations before the Business has not even groomed properly. Keeping short term goals is the biggest mistake you can commit. Keep your demands high and expect them once the time is right. give a space for the business exposure. Let the market know and publicize your services as far as you can. Once you become the next Giant whale fish, you can take at a gallop all the small fishes.

5. Keeping Two Coins and  Investing One
The great billionaire and one of world's richest investors: Warren buffett gives great emphasis on investment. To grow a company no matter small or big, you will need to sacrifice a bigger share of your cake piece.  You need to keep the stomach half empty else too full a tummy could turn you clumsy and let your competitor win the applause. You must learn to invest more and store less for a bigger and faster Boom.

Just this month I upgraded the salary of both authors who work for us. They will now be publishing posts not just at our sister blog on smart earning methods but they will also be actively publishing posts at this blog. This will provide readers with a variety of fresh new posts daily and along with good quality. In order to keep readership engaged and entertained, this small investment was important.

How Can Students Become Millionaires While Studying?

How Can Students Become Millionaires While Studying?

Seems far-fetched, doesn't it? Looks like an ad similar to the ones that say 'Google pays me so and so', yes? Well, you might be only half right, because nothing is impossible, or should I say, impossible is nothing in the world. It is only a matter of perspective and setting up goals. Now most of you are thinking, people can easily earn money by creating a blog, but that money definitely isn't in seven figures. Well, perhaps it's time to think outside the box.

The idea of creating a blog and earning money from it might have been considered 'thinking outside the box' a few years ago. But as of now, it is residing deep inside the box. Hence, the need of a change of perspective, or mindset if you will.
You can make some serious money if you have the right aptitude for it. Students, of course are the best fit, because they are quicker learners. But this doesn't other people can't read this post, which will discuss about some of the productive ways of earning money.
Besides creating a blog and earning through advertisements and affiliate programs, you can do many things to earn some good money. Nowadays, earning money is no longer easy. With evolving trends in the industries, skill is the need of the hour. Those who have equipped themselves with it are earning millions, while others are sitting back and waiting for people to lick on their ads (:P). So the bottom line is, people, especially students need to spend their time in more productive things, rather than playing games and chatting on Facebook.
Now don't get me wrong. I am not saying that earning through blogs is a bad idea, or that blogging is not productive. Oh no! Quite the contrary! If you have a blog, then that's excellent! It will help you all the more. But maybe, it's time to equip yourself with some new skills so you can counter anything coming your way in the future.
So the big question is, what to do? Well, here are a few suggestions.

Learn web development

Information Technology has already taken over out lives. Already, online connectivity is the need of the many, with new trends towards online usage growing the form of cloud computing and more. If there;s one thing for certain, it's that computers and the internet are definitely here to stay. So that makes web technologies all the more important.
The amazing thing about this field is, it hasn't gone stale. Ever since Tim Breners-Lee created HTTP in the late 80s, the field has grown in importance. Look at Mark Zuckerberg. He was a student when he created Facebook. In any of you have seen his movie, The Social Network, you'll know how he first created a website called Face Mash, which earned him reputation, and he eventually got approached by some seniors who had a project in mind, which later became Facebook. See how developing a simple website turned his luck? Now, he is a $20 Billion man!
There are other countless examples! Look at Larry Page, the founder of Google. As big as it seems now, Google must have started from scratch at one point. And it didn't just become a proper search engine at once. It was built, little by little. Look where it is now. You can find countless other such examples, like Matt Mullenweg - founder of WordPress, or Sergey Brin, founder of O'Reilly Media. All of these started from zero, yet used their skills to make their companies what they are now.
There are many places you can learn the required skills from. Just Google what you want to do. Personally, I'd recommend Lynda.com, and O'Reilly Media. They are simply the best resources available on the web today!
You don't necessarily need to make a website. You could create your own tools for your blog, or make a web app and implement it on your blog/website etc. There are literally thousands of ways you can put your skills to good use.

Create an app

For those of you who are into programming, creating an app for a smartphone is a really good idea! Not many people think about it, which makes it that much more special. Again, you can learn how to make apps fro the leading online resources such as Lynda.com and O'Reilly Media. There's really no shortage of resources one can complain about.
Now about the app itself. The important thing is to start. The challenge seems daunting, which is why most people can't get past the thinking phase. Grab any good idea that comes to your head, and run with it. Remember; for your first app, you don't really need to be unique. You can make something as simple as a currency-converter or a calculator. This will get you acquainted with the working of things. Once you have your first app, you can start thinking of a unique game or app idea. Forget Angry birds, believe me, there are people who are earning loads of money from much simpler ideas. You can make a simple app too. It'll either be popular, or it won't. But in either case, you'll learn something, and that is why you'll always be the winner.
Popular smartphone platforms are Android and iOS. So it'd be wise to create an app for them. Symbian and Blackberry platforms have since lost their touch. And as a beginner, you ought to give yourself the best chances.

Freelance projects

If you aren't into programming, then you can always look for other work that best suits your needs. Freelance workers are being hired ever day for all sorts of works. Maybe you can show them your skills and get hired. Picking up freelance projects can really buff up your pocket. There are many freelance websites where you could look for work.
Sometimes, it might be hard to find freelance work, because you have nothing to show on your portfolio. You can, however, start with the small websites, such as fiverr, or its alternatives. These will give you a fairer opportunity to show your skills to the world. And also, they will help you get your freelancing career started.

Write articles

Freelance writing is another profitable way to earn money. If you have a good grammar and good writing skills, then you should definitely try this. You can either write for big article directories, such as EzineArticles, or write for blogs that are looking for paid authors. Visit different blogs on a regular basis, and see which ones are looking for paid authors.
Those were some of the killer ways you could make money. It isn't easy, except for the last one, but if you get them right, you can be raking in bucks. And it never hurts to learn something that's not on your course :)

How to Run a Successful E-Commerce Business from Start to Finish

How to Run a Successful E-Commerce Business from Start to Finish

If you’re thinking about starting an e-commerce business, you should probably think about what you need to do to make sure it succeeds. Running a profitable online store is more than creating a website and selling products. Follow the eight steps below and you’ll soon be on your way to becoming a successful e-commerce merchant!

1. Establish an Idea

The very first thing you need to do is figure out what you’re going to sell. Do you want to sell products or services? If you’re having trouble thinking of an idea, do a little research on popular e-commerce industries. Online tech support services, dating websites, and online stores selling goods such as electronics and tobacco are some popular industries today. If you’ve decided to sell products, you’ll need to obtain a supplier’s agreement on all of the products that you’ll be selling.

2. Create a Business Plan

Now that you know what you’re going to sell, who are you going to sell it to and how are they going to find out about it? While a business plan will help put your new e-commerce business into perspective, it’ll also come in handy when applying for a merchant account — but we’ll get to that a little later. A standard business plan should include:

    A description of your business
A description of the product or service you’re selling
An analysis of your target market
    An advertising strategy
    A six-month sales projection
A description of your management team

3. Find a Web Hosting Server

Your next step is to find a website hosting service provider. The Web host is what will allow you to make your site accessible online. You need to consider many things when choosing a host. Do they have what you need to build your website? Look into how much bandwidth they offer. How much uptime do they warranty, and do they reimburse you for any long time downtime? Do they have a support team and what’s the availability of their support team? Compare prices and, of course, read reviews.

4. Design and Develop Your Website

After you have somewhere to host your website, you can begin designing and developing it. I could go on for days about this topic, but I’ll stick with some of the most important factors. Once you’ve decided on an effective layout and color scheme, here are some aspects to keep in mind:

Keep font faces clean and simple, and try to avoid fonts that are too over the top, such as Comic
    Sans and Kristen ITC.
Write detailed product descriptions that will make your customers want to buy what you’re selling.
Display multiple photos of your products highlighting different features. Also, make sure the image
    size isn’t too small.
Include About Us and Contact Us pages. The About Us page will help your customers get to know
you better, and the Contact Us page will give them a way of getting in touch with you if they have
    any issues.

5. Apply for a Merchant Account
Now that your website is up and running, you need to find a payment processor that can help you open up a merchant account — a special kind of bank account provided by acquiring banks that allows businesses to process credit cards. Since you are processing card-not-present transactions, acquiring banks will automatically label your business as “high risk,” so you should find a processor who works with high risk merchants. When applying for a merchant account, you’ll have to provide documents for the bank’s underwriting process. These documents may include:

    Résumé or CV
    Business and marketing plan
    Supplier’s agreement
    Personal bank reference letter
    Photo ID
    Utility bill
Certificate of incorporation or sole proprietorship documentation
Credit card processing history (if applicable)

6. Get a Shopping Cart

Once a bank approves you for a merchant account, you’ll need to find a shopping cart to integrate into your website and payment gateway. A payment gateway is a web application that encrypts and sends transaction information from your website to the bank for approval or denial. Not all shopping carts are compatible with all payment gateways, so be sure to get your cart after you get a merchant account and payment gateway. Ask your merchant account provider what shopping carts work with their gateway, and if they have any modules to make the integration process easy.

When picking a shopping cart, make a list of features that are most important to you. Here are some features to consider when choosing a cart:

Payment options (e.g. debit/credit cards, electronic checks)
    Multiple currency processing
Shipping options (e.g. USPS, UPS, FedEx, pick up in store)
    Multiple images per item description
Allow customers to write product or service reviews
    Printable invoices
    Sales reports

7. Learn How to Prevent and Fight Chargebacks

There will come a time when a customer feels you’ve wrongly charged them. When this happens, they may contact their credit card issuing bank and request a chargeback, asking for their money back. Chargebacks result in a loss in the approved funds, as well as having to pay a chargeback fee. There are several reasons why a customer would file a chargeback, including:

They didn’t receive the products or services they purchased
The cardholder didn’t authorize the transaction
The amount on their credit card statement is different from the amount at the time of the purchase
When the customer received the products they bought, they were damaged or not as described
    on your site

A high chargeback ratio could mean losing your merchant account and payment processing abilities. MasterCard and Visa have different requirements, but it’s a good rule of thumb to keep your chargeback ratio below 1%. However, there are ways to prevent chargebacks.

Always deliver your goods as advertised on your site
Customize your billing descriptor so the charge is recognizable on the cardholder’s statement
Email customers an online transaction receipt and require them to email or fax a signed copy back to you
Call the customer to verify the transaction and purchase
Provide a toll-free telephone number so your customers can call you directly with any questions
Use a delivery service that requires a signature upon receiving the goods

Even if you do all that you can to prevent chargebacks, it’s inevitable that they will happen. When they do, be sure to dispute them. When a customer files for a chargeback, your acquiring bank will notify you, and you’ll have three days to dispute it. Each credit card association requires different documents when disputing chargebacks, but supporting documents should include:

    A signed invoice
    A signed delivery receipt
A copy of the credit card and/or a photo ID

8. Market Your New E-Commerce Business
OK — Now that you’re website is up, and you’re able to accept credit cards online, you need to let people know you’re open for business. Social media is an excellent (and free!) tool that lets you reach a global customer base. Create a Facebook page for your online store and offer promotions and deals. Ask for customer feedback and respond to all comments in a timely manner. Use Twitter to join in on a larger conversation. Create a blog. Use Pinterest to help maintain a consistent brand for your business. Social media marketing helps advertise your business, and it also helps boost your SEO ratings.

How People Find Work Online

How People Find Work Online

These days almost everybody could do with some extra money!  What with the cost of living getting higher because of the ever increasing price of commodities.  It should not come as a surprise that the internet has become one of the most common, if not THE most common, places where people find work online. This is because it is so convenient and online jobs can fit flexibly into anyone’s schedule. You can even do more than one online job if your schedule permits it or if you are really interested in a subject. If you are interested in making extra money, you could learn some earn online strategies that can help you get just the right online job for you. It is not complicated at all, in fact it’s so easy that many people now earn a second income online!

The Advantages Of Having An Online Job

There are a number of advantages to having an online job. The first and probably the most common reason why people do it is that, compared to full time work, online jobs are reasonably easy to find. There are plenty of freelance opportunities that you can apply for that don’t need a very rigorous selection process.  There are a lot of people who even get online work simply because someone has recommended or referred them.

Although there is some sort of process that you need to go through in order to get the job, it would not be as strict as those for regular jobs. Most of the time, the only things that you need are the necessary skills, a computer, and an internet connection. You don’t have to report to an office every single day as you can work from home, which is very convenient for those people who want to be in control of their time. Although there are some online jobs that require you to work full time, there are plenty others that do not require a full eight hours of work every day.  This means that you can find something that works for you.

Basically, you have a lot of options if you want to find work online. There are a lot of opportunities out there, you do not have to limit yourself to just one, and you do not have to be restricted with the requirements of a particular employer. You can choose who to work for because there are just so many of them out there.

The Kind Of Work That You Will Do
There are various jobs that are offered online. A lot of people do article writing, graphic design, web development, etc. online. There is a huge demand for people who possess certain skills. So, the first thing that you need to do is assess yourself and determine what skills you have, what capabilities you have with which you can earn money online. When we talk about earn online strategies, you do not even have to be limited with the obvious skill sets (i.e. article writing or web development), or any others that are related.

This is because there are some people who hired people online to do some work for them as an outsourcing transaction. This means that a company or a business needs some tasks to be done, but they don’t want to handle these tasks themselves necessarily (for several reasons) so they hire people who can do those tasks for them so that their business can run as usual.

For example, there are people who are hired to do bookkeeping, to handle finances, design a leaflet, or to do other routine tasks that a company needs. You have to know that the choices are many, but one of the earn online strategies that can help you be successful in your search for the right online job is to narrow your search according to the things that you can do. The other choices are there, but you can’t really do anything about them unless you know how to do them yourself. So it would be easier and faster to start searching according to your personal skill sets.

Show Recommendations From Past Clients
This is one of the best ways to find work online!  Getting someone to refer you or recommend you to other people is a great way to find work online and build up a client list.  Businesses want to hire people that they know will deliver what they are asking of them.  If they know that you had done some previous work for someone else, then they can ask for a recommendation from them.  If you can provide them with this, then you stand a much better chance of landing the job.  When you think about it, it’s no different that including references on your CV or Resume.

3 Tips For Freelance Writers On Elance – Honesty Is The Best Policy

3 Tips For Freelance Writers On Elance – Honesty Is The Best Policy

The cardinal rule for any freelance writer operating in a virtual arena like Elance is: “Don’t over-promise and under-deliver.”  This habit is quick to kill off your freelance writing career.

If you are acquainted with Elance, or similar job posting sites, then you know how important honesty is to your success. On social medial platforms like Elance, your reputation grows by positive feedback from clients. Abandoning honesty will put you in a dangerous position. This is because when a client expects a high grade of work and receives a medium grade, he or she may write a contractor off altogether.

One of the sneaky things about over-promising is that it can easily happen to the best of us. One little exaggeration on a contractor’s Elance digital profile can result in big misunderstandings and disappointed clients.
Tips To Help You On Elance

Here are three tips from Elance contractors that should be practiced by all freelance writers, whether they work on Elance or not.

1- Be Honest With Yourself

Each one of us has a different set of strengths and weaknesses. Believe it or not, your freelance writing career will flourish with an honest eye. Distinguishing between your strengths and weaknesses does not make you a poor writer; it makes you a specialized writer. Here are a few more thoughts to consider:

Remember, each project you undertake is a work in progress. From the time you bid on a job, to the day of its completion, you are working to make it better than it was the day before.
Remember, you work from a digital platform. This makes honestly doubly important. On Elance, especially, face-to-face meetings are few and far between. Thus, it is important for you, the contractor, to regularly check in with your client and receive their approval before going ahead with the project.

2- Write Your Personal Bio In The Third Person

Elance Website 3 Tips For Freelance Writers On Elance Honesty Is The Best Policy

Let’s take a minute to talk about client- contractor communication. Your professional bio, resume, or personal website is the first form of communication you have with a client. It is the first step in establishing a relationship. Yet, these are the places where freelancers tend to slip and over-promise.

For the Elance freelance contractor, the first step in fostering these relationships is creating a bio that exudes warmth and honesty to pique the interest of future clients. You want to showcase your skills accurately, and you want to attract specific types of projects.

Writing in the third person allows freelancers to discuss their credentials, accomplishments, and qualifications without seeming haughty. It also allows them to display their likeability and exude confidence “safely,” without putting off potential clients. It forces one to honestly consider how others would describe their techniques and talents.

3- Bring Clarity To Your Proposals

The proposal phase of a project is just one more place where freelance writers feel tempted to over-promise. A proposal is essentially an opportunity for a freelancer to convince a potential client that he or she is the right person for the client’s job. If you are not careful, you will find that you have agreed to complete a job you are not qualified to do. Don’t let your persuasive skills make you dishonest.

Here is how you can avoid dishonesty:

Keep Communication Clear - It’s important to keep the message of a proposal clear by discussing the project being bid on. “Reflect the project back to the client as you understand it and emphasize the benefits of the project as you see them.” http://www.elancefreelancewriting.com/
Make A Plan – How will you carry out the job you are bidding on? Once you have a plan, explain it to the potential client in your proposal. This demonstrates to the client that you have taken an honest look at what they require. Likewise, this is an opportunity to honestly assess whether your skills will benefit the project.
Highlight Your Skills – Your potential client needs to know that you have the necessary skills with which to do his or her job well. Let your strengths shine, but be honest about your weaknesses should the client ask.

Honesty is an important trait for all freelancers working to generate an online income. Don’t become the writer that over-promises and under- delivers.

Using Mobile Games To Promote Your Online Business

Using Mobile Games To Promote Your Online Business

Creating mobile games and apps to promote your online business is now easier than in the past and well worth the effort for many online business owners. The use of mobile apps has been shown to cut costs, increase productivity, and give your business a stronger hold on the market. Yet it’s a good idea not only to think about integrating mobile apps with your business, but also to think about what kind of apps will be most effective.

Recent surveys assessing the public’s use of mobile apps have overwhelmingly showed that the most popular apps are mobile games. According to a survey conducted by BusinessDegree.net, 64% of smartphone users play games, with the average iPhone user averaging 14.7 hours per month. As a result, online business owners might want to determine how to best integrate mobile games as a promotional tool.

The Benefits Of Using Mobile Games
There are many uses of mobile apps for business owners, including new payment models that allow users to swipe their phone rather than carry credit cards. Yet gaming unlocks the door to unique promotional possibilities. By using mobile games to promote your business, you can reach a wide audience and create a buzz around your brand. Businesses can tie promotional offers as rewards for beating levels of the game, for example, or use customer purchases to unlock a new level of the game.

People love a challenge, and using mobile games as a promotional tool allows you to tap into that aspect of human nature. With more and more of the public conducting business and making purchases on the go, another benefit is that business owners can reach their target audience no matter where they might be.

Three Steps For Integrating Mobile Gaming
Laying the groundwork for this type of promotion simply involves optimizing your web design using ecommerce web hosting tools. You can then get creative with promotional possibilities.

1. Get your Website in Order

You don’t want your new customers to be underwhelmed by your actual business after playing with a fun and catchy mobile game. Preventing this means creating an ecommerce site that’s easy to navigate, visually appealing, and secure. A common mistake that overeager entrepreneurs make is to launch a huge marketing push before their website is ready. It’s easy to give your website a makeover with templates and content management systems provided by today’s services such as the Shopify ecommerce platform. Once this is squared away, you can progress on to the next level of promotions.

2. Optimize your Website for Mobile Visitors

When someone accesses your website from a tablet or smartphone, they will have a more user-friendly experience if the site has been optimized for this use. This is simply a matter of taking your already existing website, and presenting it for smaller screens. The navigation tools may need to be tweaked a bit so that they can be accessed with a touchpad rather than a mouse. You can then link your optimized mobile website to the game.

3. Create Mobile Game Apps for Your Business

The best games are usually those with relatively simple designs. It’s helpful to think about how mobile games typically work. Players usually are trying to beat their own score, or play to unlock new levels of content. To tie this in with your business, you could reward players with coupons, sales, free shipping, or other rewards when they beat a level.

Another use of mobile games could be to spark the initial introduction to your brand, by asking them to register their personal details in exchange for gaining access to the game. Purchases can be connected to the mobile app, so whenever a customer buys something, they will get a password that gives them an edge in the game or unlocks a new level of content.  The possibilities are endless with this type of promotional opportunity, helping engage your existing customers and gain new ones at the same time.

Officially according to Facebook, Facebook page updates reach about 16% of fans on average. In reality, most Facebook page updates fall into the average of 7% daily!  That means that only 7 out of 100 fans will see whatever you post on your Wall, status updates, images, videos, links, etc.

Don’t you just hate when you realize that your efforts are, for the biggest part, in vain? 93 out of 100 people won’t see that carefully crafted status update nor that link that you are trying to get them to click on. Or 930 out of 1000. And so on – no matter how many fans your page has, the percentage of those who statistically won’t see it is huge.
Luckily, you can do something about it.

First tip: Do you know how well you’re doing now?

Statistical data is one thing, but your actual numbers can be well below or beyond that 7% mark. This is pretty easy to find out – unless you’re using Sponsored Stories, but that’s another scenario. Just go to your Insights and check the numbers of your reach. To be more accurate, take the numbers from the last 30 days and take the average; then divide the number you got by the number of your fans – and there you go, something to start from.

The simplest way to increase engagement! (and pretty effective too)

Images! Facebook users love images, and Facebook loves what their users love. Facebook EdgeRank (what determines whether your content will reach a greater number of people) prefers visual to textual content. So yes, funny and meaningful status updates are all fine, but you can accompany them with an image for better visibility, or write them across the image (all it takes is two minutes of your time and basic Photoshop skills, or even simple Paint).

Status updates, quotes, practically anything you can publish as text – you can publish as an image as well. They’re more likely to be seen and read than the plain text updates (although you don’t want to forget about those either), and they don’t take time to be seen as the video content does.

Second tip: Stimulate the engagement, it’s not as difficult as you may think.
Increased interaction also influences your EdgeRank, and it’s up to you to create it – your Facebook page fans won’t get activated by themselves. This doesn’t require you to be online all the time, nor to spend large amounts of money on sweepstakes and contest prizes; it doesn’t even require that you be insanely creative – you can look around, see what others are doing, modify their idea to suit your audience, and you’re all set.

Some of the most engaging activities on Facebook include:

Asking a personal question that the fans should answer to by filling in the blank (it has to be personal, because your fans will be delighted to share something about themselves)
Multiple choice Q&A – even one letter comment (y or n) counts as a comment, don’t forget that!
Sharing inspirational quotes (people easily relate to them and want to show them to their friends)

In one month, do the above calculation again and see how well you did – for the boost in morale; then just continue with the tips we shared, and add some more – and you’ll do just fine.

10 Twitter Tips To Drive Traffic To Your Site

10 Twitter Tips To Drive Traffic To Your Site

A large percentage of my website traffic comes from Twitter. I know that many of you enjoyed the tips that I shared in my FREE 7 Day eCourse about making money from blogging and making your own website, so today I wanted to look more in detail at how Twitter can help your business.

I am a big fan of Twitter marketing! It is such a great tool that you can use to find targeted traffic for your website, whilst allowing you to network with people from all over the world.

Most people that use Twitter tend to tweet meaningless nonsense, such as what they ate for lunch! That is great for people that use it purely for social reasons, however if you are planning to use Twitter to help you market your business, then you need to be using it in a more productive way.

The best thing about Twitter is that the people using it are so diverse! It doesn’t matter what your business is about, you will be able to find people almost instantly who are interested in your niche. This allows you to quickly find people who are part of your targeted audience.

The following are some tips that you can use to improve your Twitter account and increase traffic to your website.

Driving Traffic From Twitter To Your Blog

Lets get to the point! You want to use Twitter to drive traffic to your blog/website. Twitter is one of the best social media tools for driving traffic to your blog. I use it to update all of my followers about what’s new on my websites and what I’m doing (@matt_oit). It is such an amazing feeling when you tweet about a new post on your site and people start to re-tweet it, spreading the word.

Using Twitter and Blogging Together

To get the most out of Twitter, you need to promote Twitter on your website and there are a few ways to do this. The most obvious way to do this is to display a Twitter button on your homepage, or better yet within your sidebar so that it displays on all of your website pages. This button links directly to your Twitter account, allowing people to sign-up and follow you.
Another great way to promote Twitter on your site is to display sharing links on your posts. As you can see, at the top of all of my blog posts I display ‘AddThis‘ share buttons. This allows anyone to share my posts on any of the social media sites online, including Twitter. Counters can help show how popular your posts are to new visitors.
Also, consider placing a ‘Recent Tweets’ box on your site. This will display your newest tweets that your visitors may be interested in. Ultimately, this is just another way to encourage people to ‘follow‘ you.

Promote Yourself

You need to make sure that you promote yourself and your blog on Twitter. If you can do this well, then you will be able to build a strong brand identity that will be beneficial in the long run.
One of the key parts of your Twitter profile is your bio. Write a bio that clearly states what your blog is about and add a link to your site. This sounds really easy, but take some time to think about this. You only have a limited amount of characters, so make them count. If after reading your bio, people don’t get what you are about, they won’t stick around.
The best way to promote your site is to tweet about it! Tweet about all of your new posts a couple of times a day and keep everyone up to date about everything that is happening with your site. Surprisingly, a lot of people think that if they promote themselves on Twitter, then that makes them a spammer. That is just not true! It is fine to promote yourself, as long as you do it the right way. Tweeting every 5 minutes about your new post or an affiliate link would be classed as spam. Mix it up a bit and you will be fine. Tweet about your new post, but then tweet about other things that might be related.
If you can get the right balance and learn to promote your site in the best way, then you will begin to see results.

Make Friends

Twitter is a social site, so be social! There is a whole community related to your niche out there, so get involved. Chat to people, make friends, share ideas, ask question, re-tweet, etc.
I am always amazed when I get followed by someone that doesn’t tweet. When I check their profile, they are following x thousand people, but have never tweeted a single thing. You can’t expect to make friends and build your brand without tweeting.
Blogging is a community, so find similar people that blog within your field and interact with them. The more blogging friends that you can connect with, the better your blog will be as you will be able to share ideas with each other.

Listen To Your Twitter Followers

One of the best things about Twitter is that you can get almost instant reaction to your tweets from your followers. It is important that you listen to your followers as they can tell you what is working and what isn’t. A particular post that you tweet may be particularly popular, so you might want to do a follow up post on the same subject. Similarly, if you don’t get much reaction from one of your tweets, it may be because there isn’t much interest for it.
You can just ask your followers what they like and what they don’t and why. This way you are almost treating Twitter as a tool for market research that can help you with your business.
Have Conversations
Twitter is full of people having great conversations with one another. The best ones are full of useful information that can be very helpful to you. Don’t be shy, jump into conversations, ask questions and contribute to the discussion, or better yet start your own. People are very helpful when you are nice to them, you can learn a lot from many different people and build a useful network of people.

Honesty Is The Best Policy

I think that this is important for every aspect of your business and life in general. It is very easy to tell when someone is clearly talking a load of rubbish about something. Doing that only results in loosing business. Just be honest about who you are and what you are talking about. Trust is such an important part in any relationship, whether that be a romantic relationship or simply a business relationship. People are much more likely to listen to you and do business with you if they trust you.
Be honest on Twitter. If you come across something that you really like, or that you think your followers will like, then tell them about it. If you find something that you don’t like, then also tell them about it and why you don’t like it. You may find that not all of your followers agree with everything that you say, but ultimately they will value your honest opinion, which is far more important!

Straight To The Point

I am a big fan of writing informative posts that people can read. On Twitter, this is not possible because you have a limited 140 characters to use. This means that you need to get to the point with your Tweets!
This can be a bit of an art form, but the more you Tweet, the better you will get at doing it. You need to provide maximum information with minimum characters. Keep your titles, questions, comments, etc. short and concise, whilst still being easy to read.
Any links that you want to include should be shortened. This is easy to achieve with the many online URL shortener websites that are available online. I myself use bitly.com to shorten all of my links. This is such a great tool that dramatically reduces the amount of space that your links take up in your tweets.

Twitter Backgrounds

Twitter allows you to customise your Twitter account, so you can change all of the colours and you can upload your own background image. Why is this important? Well, by customising your own account, you make yourself stand out from the rest of the crowd. You can make all of your account colours match your website colours. Check out our Twitter account to see how we did this to match our website.
The background image is the most important part of this process. You can include a lot of important information on your background image that your followers might find useful. The most obvious would be to display your website address, but you could also show social network addresses, any products that you are promoting, company logo, etc.

5 Ways To Do Social Media Marketing The Right Way

5 Ways To Do Social Media Marketing The Right Way

Unlike what is generally perceived by people, marketing is not limited to just sales and promotions. Marketing is a holistic process that starts long before a business opportunity, when a market or a product is identified or created. One of the mediums used for marketing is social media. Social media marketing encompasses almost all areas that traditional marketing includes, such as customer research, promotion, sales, and customer feedback. It is also possible for businesses to execute their marketing activities strictly through social media. Social media includes social networking sites, cell phones and any other medium that people use to interact with each other.

Social Media Marketing Tools

We have heard quite a lot about the different social networking sites used by businesses to carry out their social media marketing techniques. However, not enough light has been shed upon the various tools used to maximize the benefit derived out of social media. Social media tools are used by experts to analyse holistic trends, related to different issues being talked about on social networking sites. They also include practices that boost the effectiveness of the social media features. Some of them include:

1. Social Media Measurement

Just the way businesses carry out surveys to find the extent to which customers are aware about their brands, social media measurement tools quantify the presence of certain marketing content on social media such as social networking sites, micro-blogs, news sites, blogs, and other forums. An area that compliments social media measurement is social media monitoring. A collection of professionals, that includes sales teams, social engagement staff, marketing teams and PR staff, is used to gain insights into not only the presence of a certain brand, but other areas as well such as:

User interaction involving the discussion of the brand in question
Users expressing an increase in desirability of the brand
Impact of social media marketing on online sales
Change in competitors’ social media marketing strategy as a response to the brand’s strategy
Target market’s consumer behaviour in general and their inclination towards other issues, products, and brands

Since the area of social media measurement and monitoring has recently emerged, tools related to it are still developing. The ones that are present already are quite large in number and wide in variety. Some of them are entry level that can be used for free, while others are very powerful and are used by large organizations only. It must be noted that social media measurement tools have one of the two areas as their focus:

Data Centeredness – These tools focus on collecting and analyzing data extensively to reveal trends. Such analysis helps companies identify areas that require change.
Solution Centeredness – These tools track the presence of brands on the Internet and propose solutions to increase brand visibility and user engagement.
A lot of tools are a homogeneous combination of the two foci.

2. Social Network Aggregation

Given the huge number of social networking sites that have emerged over time, users often create accounts and use them on more than one platform. Since their accounts on different platforms contain exclusive sets of information, maintaining them all becomes quite cumbersome at times. This is where social network aggregation comes in. It is a process that lets users collect their profiles and information from different social networking sites on a single platform.

Social network aggregators come in the form of different tools and widgets that allow users to carry out tasks across different networks at the same time, such as accessing profiles, reading RSS feeds, searching for information, combining bookmarks, tracking friends, and consolidating messages.

3. Social Bookmarking

Social bookmarking is yet another emerging field that has seen significant growth over the last two years. With the growing quantity of user related information present on the Internet, – a lot of which is generated by other users – the need to compile it all at the same place was realized. This compilation would make it easier and take less time for users to search for certain information. Different titles have been given to the concept of social bookmarking such as ‘tagging’. Facebook users are able to tag their friends in photos, statuses, notes, and comments. People may tag themselves in photos also. This way, with a single click, a user can have a look at all the pictures others have uploaded of him/her.

4. Social Analytics

Social analytics is a field of online marketing that allows companies to collect and analyze data of consumers who use social media. There are numerous companies that render services related to social analytics such as Telligent Systems, Expert System, Attensity, and General Sentiment. These companies’ job is to collect information related to different market segments. Once they do so, they are approached by clients. These clients are not necessarily businesses that sell products and services. They may also be businesses (such as advertising agencies) that cater to other businesses.

It must be noted that not all companies have to avail the services of different social analytics companies. They may also carry out analyses themselves by using platforms such as Klout, Swaylo, PeerIndex, and Empire Avenue. These tools help them find out their brands’ presence in social media. They also present solutions that companies must follow to engage people from the target market and increase their brand awareness among them. A number of companies such as JetBlue, Royal Bank of Canada, and Whirlpool have used these tools to accomplish their goals.

5. Automation
Purists almost consider automation a sin. However, others realize that given the ever increasing number of platforms used by businesses for social media marketing, automation is a tool that simply makes their efforts easier and faster. A certain level of responsibility must be exercised when applying automation because its overuse can lead to spamming that can annoy consumers and lead to the decline of brands’ desirability. When used wisely, automation can be not only good, but great. It picks up areas that are left untouched.

For example, TwitterFeed is a great way of connecting your blog to people on different social networking sites. Once you are done with writing a blog post, instead of posting links to your profiles on different sites, you can simply relax. You can do so by automating the process of sharing information on Twitter by using TwitterFeed. As soon as you publish a blog post, a message is automatically sent to all the members even if you are not signed into your Twitter account. Similarly, NetworkedBlogs is another tool that automatically informs your friends on Facebook about blog posts you publish.

The reason why social media marketing tools have emerged is because of the effectiveness of social media marketing itself. Today, the world revolves around information. Consumers make decisions based on the information they get about brands, and businesses make decisions based on information they get about consumers. Information minimizes the risk factor these parties are exposed to. Social media marketing has become so popular over the years because of three chief reasons.

Rapid Action

There is hardly any other medium that spreads information faster than social media. The structure social media is built on and the way its users behave on it make it a platform that spreads information like wild fire. For this reason, businesses find marketing their brands on social networking sites, micro blogs, cell phones, and other social media tools to their advantage.

Highly Experiential

Another benefit that businesses enjoy using social media marketing is the extent to which they can engage their audience. Earlier, Orkut, Facebook, Blogger, and other services allowed users to share information of limited formats. After much development, they let information of virtually any type to be created and shared online. Whether it be social networking sites or blogs, textual, pictorial, and visual content can be easily uploaded. Some platforms are limited to certain types of information. For example, Twitter users share texts, YouTube focuses on videos and Pinterest supports pictures only. Hence, their users attach links to external online locations that can be visited for further experience.

Cost Effective

Cost effectiveness is another reason for social media marketing’s boom. Unlike traditional media such as TVCs, billboards, newspaper ads, etc. social media platforms charge a lot less. This is because of the relatively lower business costs they themselves incur. Also, certain practices such as PPV (pay per view) and PPC (pay per click), make payment options not only low, but also efficient because clients pay for only what they have benefited from.

All in all, social media marketing is a field that highly depends on consumer behaviours. Its success depends on what consumers like and don’t like. Meanwhile, business collect, analyze, and use information related to social media to make decisions related to promotion, engage target audience, increase product/service sales, and receive customer feedback. With time, social media marketing practices are bound to evolve because of the changes in technology, politics, economy, consumer behaviour, and other factors.

3 Profitable Niche Blog Topics – Select A Blog Topic That Makes Money?

3 Profitable Niche Blog Topics – Select A Blog Topic That Makes Money?

You may just be getting starting within the world of blogging, or perhaps you have blogged before, but if you are considering starting a blog to earn money, then you are making a very wise decision!

Blogs have become a very lucrative piece of web property online because they have the highest return on your investment. This is because they require almost no investment to set one up, but can result in high profits.

Now, this all sounds great, but to ensure your success as a blogger, you have to make sure that you are getting into the right niche to begin with!

There are an infinite amount of niche topics that you could build a site around, but many of them won’t make you any money because they are too specific. For example, a site that focuses on glow in the dark shoes, won’t (I’d imagine?) get much traffic, therefore limiting its income potential. In contrast, a site that concentrates on women’s shoes, will be much more popular.

One of the most important things to remember when picking a niche, is that you must be interested in the subject. You could pick a great niche topic, with huge potential, but if you are not that interested in it, then you won’t put the work in that is needed.

Currently, there are three huge profitable niche topics online. These are; ‘Health & Fitness‘, ‘Relationships‘ and ‘Money & Finance‘.

Health & Fitness
This blog niche seems to be profitable no matter what time of year it is, the economic situation of the country, or how society and culture changes!

The health and fitness market is awash with narrow and targeted niches that you can focus on. Think about all of the different fields that fall under this category; diet, weight loss, exercise equipment, nutrition, etc.

Setting up a blog focused to answering some of the burning questions and needs people have with regards to their health and fitness level, would be very popular. After all, people will always be willing to pay in order to look and feel better. So a blog within this market is guaranteed to earn you money

Relationships
Another niche that has always been highly profitable is within the market of relationship advice. This is a huge market that has many targeted niches within it that you could build a site around. This can include; romantic relationship advice, dating sites, parenting advice, professional working relationships, social media, etc.

Our lives and our happiness is so dependent on the relationships that we have with one another, there will always be money in helping people to connect with others and lead a more fulfilling live.

Money & Finance
The third and arguably most profitable blog niche is money and finances! Everyone is always looking to improve their finances, make more money, set up a business, debt advice, getting a job, etc.

This is the niche that this site is built around, because I enjoy helping people learn how they can set up their own site and make money from it, which provides me with a nice income for myself. You yourself are reading this very article, so I must be doing something right!

I hope this post has given you some ideas to create your own website.  If you have any questions or just want to share your opinions, then please leave a comment below.

Making the Most of Your Business Assets

Making the Most of Your Business Assets

Running a business is one of the toughest challenges you can professionally face. Every business owner deals with a constant flow of hurdles, but there are easy ways to overcome them. It just takes the right knowledge to successfully compete in the business world and overcome its daily challenges. There are a few tricks to every trade and there are several solutions that successful businesses share.

Business Assets
At the core of every business is a numbers game. It is all part of the challenge of operating a successful business. The numbers associated with profit and cost are at a constant battle. In order for profit to prevail, a company will have to take advantage of its business assets. Every business has assets; some business owners don’t even realize that they may have some very powerful business assets. These assets could be used to help a business turn a profit. Assets can be physical items like: office furniture, computers, machinery, or a finished product and its components.
Not every business sells a product, but rather a service. These businesses may not have physical assets that they can take advantage of, but they still have very powerful assets in the form of open invoices.
Any business can leverage the power of these assets in order to help make a profit. At the end of the day however, there is a wide range of expenses that must be paid. A business that is not making a profit will not be able to handle these expenses and thus, stay alive.
Is a Loan the Right Solution?

Are Payday Loans Going Out Of Fashion Making the Most of Your Business Assets
Loans can be a great way for any business to get ahead, but getting approved for a business loan is often a difficult task. Banks will require every business to meet a specific set of requirements. If these requirements are not met, then the bank will deny the loan. The few businesses that are lucky enough to meet the strict requirements of a bank funded business loan will be facing higher interest rates, and most banks don’t fund 100% of the original loan amount.

Asset Based Lending May Be the Better Choice
This is a unique form of lending that allows you to benefit from your business assets. These assets could be inventory or open invoices. In order for any business to take full advantage of this unique type of lending, they will need to find a company that specializes in this type of lending. This type of company is called a factoring company.
A growing business will face its own unique set of challenges. There are businesses all over the world that grow faster than their cash flow intake. That is where asset based lending comes in.

How Does It Work? This type of lending allows a business to take advantage of its inventory or accounts receivables by using them as collateral. Accounts receivable financing allows a business to collect the funds from open invoices before they are due. It is not uncommon for a business to give its customers 60 or 90-day terms. This is great for the average customer, but for a business, it can be difficult to continue steady growth without access to the funds that are tied up in the invoices. This type of financing allows businesses to retrieve profits with open invoices.
Purchase order financing is another excellent option. This form of financing allows a business to finance the purchase of items that have already been sold to a credit-worthy customer. 1st Commercial Credit PO Financing is another solution for businesses that are growing faster than their cash flow.

What Are the Benefits?
This financing technique does not come with all of the same hassles that a traditional bank loan does. The interest rates or fees may be a bit higher than a traditional bank, but there are not as many pre-requisites. There are no audits, no financials, no minimums, no upfront fees and no hidden fees. Setting everything up can take as little as 3-5 days. Once everything is set up, the funds can be available in as little as 24 hours.

Best Ways to Decorate Home

Best Ways to Decorate Home

Whether redecorating or starting from the scratch, home decor is all about transforming an ordinary house into your dream home. The nuisance is in finding the right furniture as well as the decorations to make it profoundly beautiful which captivates the onlookers. Well, this can be a tricky part as there are abundant decorating ideas and objects to give just the right touch. However, that many options often leave you confused.

Once donning the kids` rooms with Disney movie characters and comic book leads, themed decorations have now taken over the grownup space. Not exactly comics or cartoons, but something abstract which enables women to decorate their homes in various themes and see their fantasies sail. A theme decoration lays out a dream, tells a story and most importantly defines the homeowner, reflecting their beliefs, ideas and personal interests. Hence, you must be very careful while choosing a theme and planning the layout.

Winter Theme
Winter theme is usually appropriate for colder climates, but if you can keep the temperature of your home cool at all times, you can give it a try. The must have item for winter themed decoration is a fireplace – you don`t have to light a fire, but it must be there with some ottomans, a small table and a rug placed by it to create an authentic winter look. Winter is all about being cozy and snugly – keep that in mind. Placing cushions on the sofa with a soft unfolded blanket will create a warm ambiance perfect for winters.

Don`t be too flashy with decorations – use pastel colors to bring out the beauty of natural elements which add serenity to the home. Wood and stone are perfect for winters – so invest in decorating pieces made of these two. Better yet, you should place some dried flowers on a vase with dried leaves around it and on the table as if it had just fallen. Buy low watt light bulbs and increase the romantic vibes in the air.

Tropical Theme
Also known as the Hawaiian Theme, this theme is based on the vibrant tropical lifestyle. If you are high-spirited, you should bring home the turquoise water, exotic beaches, intensely hued corals, splendid flowers, green palms, clear blue sky and a never-say-die spirit of tropical areas and uplift your mood. Choose read and yellow for the draperies, furniture upholstery, bed covers bath towels, etc... And add seashells to the curtains. Cane and bamboo furniture is befitting for this theme.

Bring your home alive with zestful and peppy decorations on the walls. You can even have the walls painted with blue ocean waves. If you have a backyard, install a hammock and if not, try the cloth hammock (throw in some pillows as well) in the living room or even balcony. Buy indoor palm trees and adorn your living room with them – they are easy to grow and care for. You can also use coconut shell replicas as ashtray, soup bowls and even pen stands.

Asian Theme
Embroidered curtains, beaded upholstery, Dragon phoenix lying on coffee table tops, Feng Shui chimes and crystals hanging over the doors and more items can give your home a unique Asian look. For lighting, you can blend the amazing Chinese lamps and the magnificent traditional Indian chandeliers to create a magical look. Traditional utensils in the kitchen and dining room make the place awe-inspiring.

Use furniture made of bamboo adorn with the upholstery graced by Jaipuri patchwork or embroidery. Artwork of Asia should be placed on various tables and hung on the walls. Pottery figurines, Lord Buddha idols, paintings depicting Asian cultures and other things look just stunning. You can even get a bookshelf designed as a ying-yang symbol and brighten up the room. While decorating, you have to keep in  mind that the Asian theme is soothing and relaxing, so try not to overdo it.

Traditional or Antique Theme
One of the most common themes, Antique theme accentuates the look of every room. You can choose to transform your living room into something that screams sixteenth century exploration with framed historic travel maps on the walls, contemporary furniture, a file cabinet with travel books, a small telescope on the side table, an antique table with a globe and a traditional lamp on top of it. These will add a distinct appeal to the living room.

The best thing about Antique theme is that you can depict a different era in each and every room. While the living room is all about exploration, your bedroom can be a reflection of the Victorian Age. Throw in the vintage bed with curtains, a chest, an ottoman and the crucial item – the carved-wood room separator. Instead of buying a dressing table, you should hang an old mirror over the wooden chest and place two antique lamps, each on one side to pull them together.

Likewise, you can go for a rock n` roll theme with retro record player or a radio set, posters of Rolling Stones, Dire Straits, Led Zapplin and other musicians of the age. Whatever theme you like, just choose items that tell stories and blend well to present a sense of unity as well as lend an exquisite appeal to the room.

Signs of a Healthy Relationship

Signs of a Healthy Relationship

Relationships form an important part for a healthy living and we often need someone to express our sorrows, happiness, and other emotions. There are twits and turns in every relationship, but that doesn`t mean that you`re losing out of it, in fact, the hard phases of any relationship are just to test your trust on each other and how efficiently you manage that. Healthy relationship makes your life beautiful and boosts your confidence to achieve high in your life. Healthy relationships make the journey of your life smooth and protect you against odd situations. Trust, honesty, mutual respect are pillars for a healthy relationship and some signs that indicate a healthy relationship are:

Healthy Space:
Giving space in a relationship matters a lot. Those in a healthy relationship are not over dependent on each other and does not require approval for small things, instead they get support at times when needed. They share a good time together along with a separate personal space where they can do whatever they want. Asking questions from your partner every time may make him/her feel awkward  and might bring your relationship at a sad node.

Emotional Support:
A healthy input is required to bloom a relationship by both partners. Happy couples provide emotional support and do not blame or criticize their partner in front of others. If they have any issues, a happy couple would  discuss them in private  instead of making their grievances public. Emotional support makes the living healthy and a couple happier.

Sharing Responsibilities:
One must try to share equal responsibilities with his/her partner, whether they are household responsibilities or of children. Putting the burden of all responsibilities on your partner alone will make him/her less important. Happy couples share equal duties and execute them well.

Respecting one`s privacy:
Healthy relationship keeps the option of privacy. It`s not at all important to always be together all the time. A happy couple can share the period of silence without interacting with each other while engaged in activities such as reading, pottering around the house or whatever.

Good sense of humour:
A happy couple share a good sense of humour and laugh together. They enjoy together and make their life easy by laughing out at humorous situations.

Maintain relationships with friends and family:
One should respect his/her partner relationships and encourage them to do so. You can expect respect towards yourself from your partner or from his/her relations only if you respect them. It`s a give and take policy and one should not take it lightly.

Sharing finances:
It`s not important that both partners spend equally, but they should share their finances during tough situations instead of keeping them private.

Both partners should have respect for sexual boundaries and should be honest about sexual activity if it is a sexual relationship.

19 Weight Loss Secrets

19 Weight Loss Secrets

We've collected ingenious tips like this from 19 countries, asking leading nutritionists and Reader's Digest's own international editors to divulge the quirks of their cultures that can help us all. Consider it a world weight-loss tour you don't need tickets for. Ready to send your belly packing?

Spice it up-Thailand

Thai food is among the spiciest in the world. Hot peppers raise your metabolism, but the real benefit of food with a little zing is that it slows your eating, says James Hill, PhD, past president of the American Society for Nutrition. 'Americans eat too fast,' he says. 'By the time your body signals that it's full, you've overeaten. Eating slower is a good weight-loss strategy, and making food spicier is an easy way to do it.'

Downsize the Supersizing-United Kingdom

If you walk into a McDonald's in London, the clerk won't ask if you'd like to 'supersize' that. This option was discontinued in the U.K. after it accounted for less than 0.1 percent of sales. The Brits prefer smaller portions-perhaps a lingering vestige of the frugality instilled by World War II rationing, says Simon Hartley, executive editor of Reader's Digest U.K.
In the United States, McDonald's has backed off supersizing too. But a large Coke here still contains 100 calories more than one in the U.K., and there's no such thing as a Double Quarter Pounder with Cheese in Great Britain. Take the hint: Who really needs to eat a half-pound of meat at a sitting?

Serve a side of rice and beans-Brazil

All that shaking at Carnaval isn't the only body-friendly habit in Rio; Brazilians stay slim by enjoying this traditional dish with just about every meal, says Sérgio Charlab, editor of Reader's Digest Brazil. A study in the journal Obesity Research found that a diet consisting primarily of rice and beans lowers the risk of becoming overweight by about 14 percent when compared with typical Western fare. That's because it's lower in fat and higher in fiber, which is thought to stabilize blood sugar levels. It may be counter-intuitive, but a diet full of beans equals a beach-ready body.

Try fasting once in a while -Indonesia

Islam, this country's leading religion, encourages periodic fasting-no food or drink from dawn to dusk. Others in Indonesia practice mutih, which allows only water and white rice. Although experts don't recommend fasting for weight control, fasting in moderation can break patterns of mindless eating, says Hill, of the American Society for Nutrition. 'Most Americans never get hungry,' he points out. 'We've eaten the next meal before we've entirely digested the last one.' No need for strict abstinence to get these psychological benefits-try just cutting your calories in half for a day.

Eat at home more often than you eat out -Poland

Poles typically spend only 5 percent of their family budget on eating out. According to U.S. Department of Agriculture statistics, the average American family spends 37 percent of its food dollars at restaurants and fast-food joints. To save money and pounds, start tracking how often you eat out and how much you spend each month, and gradually cut back. 'People who don't cook at home tend to eat less healthy food and be heavier than people who do,' says journalist and activist Michael Pollan. 'In fact, the collapse of cooking in a society tracks very closely its rise in obesity.'

Eat your breakfast -Germany

An impressive 75 percent of Germans eat breakfast daily (compared with just 44 percent of Americans). They're not grabbing Egg McMuffins either; they're sitting down to fruit and whole-grain cereals and breads. Nutritionists have been advising people not to skip breakfast for years, but recent studies give a better picture of its importance. In one, British researchers discovered that if you haven't eaten breakfast, your brain's reward center will light up more vividly when you see a high-calorie food-making you more likely to indulge. Finally: a scientific explanation for that irresistible urge to pull into Dunkin' Donuts.

Swap the gas pedal for the bike pedal -Netherlands

Bikes (18 million) outnumber people (16.5 million) in the Netherlands. But unlike Americans-most of whose two-wheelers languish in basements and garages-54 percent of Dutch bike owners use them for daily activities, such as shopping and traveling to work. The average Dutchman pedals 541 miles per year. Traffic lights in parts of Amsterdam are even synchronized to bike speed. Bike-to-Work Day in the United States is Friday, May 21-try using your bike to commute that day or just for errands close to home. If you're of average size and pedaling at a moderate pace, you can burn around 550 calories per hour.

Try a bowl of muesli -Switzerland

Muesli is a porridge or cereal made from oats, fruit, and nuts, each of which has been linked to better health and weight control. It was developed by a Swiss physician more than a hundred years ago to nourish hospital patients, but the Swiss eat it for breakfast or as a light evening dish. Muesli's fiber makes it slow to digest, keeping you feeling full longer. Read the label carefully, though: Sugar content can vary from 2 to 14 grams per serving.

Carve out a dacha plot -Russia

Country houses, or dachas, where 51 percent of city folk spend vacations and summer weekends, almost always feature a garden. Russians grow their own vegetables and fruits and preserve and can what they grow. That makes their diet more nutritious. And 'there's not much you can grow in a garden that will make you fat,' notes Hill.

Turn up the turmeric -Malaysia

This spice, a key ingredient in curries, grows wild in Malaysian jungles. One of its chief components is a substance called curcumin, which may turn out to be a potent fat fighter. A recent Tufts University study found that mice fed a high-fat diet with small amounts of curcumin gained less weight than did other mice given similar but curcumin-free meals. Researchers think the ingredient suppresses the growth of fat tissue and increases fat-burning. Try some in your next stir-fry.

Sip some rooibos tea -South Africa

Enjoyed throughout the country, rooibos tea is more robust than green tea, and because it's naturally sweet, it needs no sugar. Ditching your daily Frappuccino for a cup of rooibos-Starbucks now sells it-could save you thousands of calories per month. 'Tea-drinking cultures generally have lower rates of obesity,' says Dr. Pescatore. 'That may be from special compounds, such as catechins, that certain teas contain, or it may simply be that we often think we're hungry when we're really dehydrated.'

Crunch more pickles -Hungary

Hungarians like things pickled-not just cucumbers but bell peppers, cabbage, and tomatoes. These tart treats can help keep you thin, probably because of the vinegar that pickles them. Growing evidence suggests that acetic acid, the main component of vinegar, helps reduce blood pressure, blood sugar levels, and the formation of fat. Pickles aren't your thing? Swap your ranch salad dressing for oil and vinegar.

Take a Sunday family tour -Norway

It's a deeply rooted Norwegian habit: On Sunday, everyone from toddlers to grandparents heads out to hike (in summer) or cross-country ski (in winter). Compare that with the typical American household, where the only Sunday expedition is from the fridge to the football game on TV. Start a Nordic tradition in your house. At halftime, shoo everyone outdoors for a walk around the neighborhood.

Get yourself all twisted up-India

Most Americans respect yoga's stress-busting and flexibility-enhancing power, but not many realize it facilitates weight loss. In fact, a recent study found that yoga devotees have a lower body mass index (BMI) than other exercisers do. There are probably multiple reasons. Yoga is best done on an empty stomach and can build muscle (depending on your preferred poses), which boosts your metabolism. And it encourages mindfulness, which includes paying attention to whether you feel full.

Perfect the power nap -Japan

In this on-the-go country, many people take time for a daily 20- to 30-minute nap, says James Maas, PhD, a sleep researcher at Cornell University and the author of Power Sleep. There's increasing evidence that chronic sleep deprivation raises the risk of weight gain. Maas blames two hormones: leptin, which helps the brain sense when you're full, and ghrelin, which triggers hunger. The less sleep you get, the lower your leptin levels-and the higher your ghrelin. 'Many people think they're hungry when they're actually sleepy,' Maas says. 'Instead of a snack, they need some shut-eye.'

Make the midday meal the biggest -Mexico

Instead of ingesting the bulk of the day's calories in the evening, as most Americans do, Mexicans traditionally eat their biggest meal between 2 and 4 p.m. If you eat less at night, you'll wake up hungrier and eat a bigger breakfast, which facilitates weight control. As a general fat-fighting rule, try to get the bulk of your daily calories at breakfast and lunch.

Sit long, talk lots -France

The French excel at the leisurely family meal. On average, 92 percent of French families dine together nightly, compared with 28 percent of American families. 'For the French, eating is the event of the day,' says Fred Pescatore, MD, president of the International & American Associations of Clinical Nutritionists. 'For us, it's something we do before heading out to do something else.' Lengthy meals actually encourage less eating, Dr.Pescatore says: Conversation slows down the fork and gives you time to realize you're full.

Take up nordic walking -Finland

This is one of the Finns' favorite outdoor activities. It's not as exotic as it sounds: All that's required is a pair of inexpensive, lightweight walking poles. Holding these in your hands aids balance, which is great if you're older or if you're on slippery terrain. Even better: Because they make you use muscles in your shoulders, arms, and torso, the poles transform walking into a total-body workout that burns 20 percent more calories, according to a study at the Cooper Institute in Dallas. Winter or summer, it's a simple way to derive more fat-reducing benefit from your regular walk.

Swallow more herring -Netherlands

The Dutch down about 85 million of these slippery fish per year-raw. That's about five for every person in the country (and five more than eaten here). They're pickled, then served unadorned as snacks or in soft buns with onions and gherkins for lunch.Oily fish like herring is slimming for a few reasons, says Dr. Pescatore, author of The Hamptons Diet. It contains lots of omega-3 fatty acids, which reduce levels of the stress hormone cortisol-and cortisol is known to increase the amount of fat deposited around your middle. What's more, lunching on herring or canned sardines guarantees you'll ingest far fewer calories than you would if you eat a burger or even fish sticks. Just don't forget the breath mints.
